New York Hunter Safety Tips
A safe hunt starts long before anyone steps into the woods. In New York, changing weather, mixed public and private land, and busy firearm seasons make planning as important as marksmanship.

Know the rules before you go
New hunters in New York must complete the required hunter education before buying a hunting license. Rules can change by season, species, and location, so check current NYSDEC regulations before each trip.
Carry the right license, tags, and permission for the land you plan to hunt. If hunting private property, get clear approval first.
Treat every firearm as loaded
The most reliable safety habit is simple: control the muzzle at all times. Keep it pointed in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot, and confirm the firearm is unloaded before crossing fences, climbing, or entering a vehicle.

Be seen and be certain
Wear fluorescent orange or pink when required, and even when it is not required, it can help others see you. Before any shot, identify the target, what is in front of it, and what lies beyond it.
Never shoot at sound, movement, or a shape.

Plan for the weather and terrain
New York conditions can shift quickly. Pack layers, water, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and a charged phone. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

Safe hunting protects people, wildlife, and the future of the sport. Prepare carefully, hunt patiently, and make every decision with safety first.
Earn-a-2nd-Buck Requirements
Hunters who harvest and report an antlerless deer on any valid antlerless deer tag will be eligible to receive a second Antlered Deer Tag. Both Antlered Deer Tags may be used during any season (with appropriate privileges) except the September antlerless season, and both may be used during the same season.
The second Antlered Deer Tag will be automatically added to the hunter’s DEC Automated Licensing System (DECALS) account and emailed to them if there is a valid email associated with their account. E-tag users will see the second Antlered Deer Tag in the HuntFishNY mobile app under “Licenses & Tags/Report Harvest”. Paper tag users will be able to print the tag from their email receipt or from their online DECALS profile, or can obtain their second Antlered Deer Tag at a regional DEC office (appointment required). Paper tag users must have the second Antlered Deer Tag in their possession before hunting for and harvesting a second antlered deer.
